Long Island Wedding to Remember

by Greg
(Alexandria, VA)

My favorite Long Island memory is my wedding day back in September, 2003. My wife and I got married in a little church in Westhampton Beach and had our reception at The Old Field Vineyard in Southhold, just a few miles outside of Greenport.

Although it was a long drive between the church and reception site (about 45 minutes), it gave our guests a chance to pass by all the great little towns along the north fork and see all the great vineyards and wineries along the way.

It was early September and the weather was perfect, 72 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. The Old Field is a beautiful property and we had a large tent set up on the lawn next to the old house. From there, we could look in one direction and see the water with a great view of Shelter Island across the way; in the other direction we could see the vineyards, another gorgeous view.

After sunset our luck got even better. It was a full moon that night and the moon, shining across the water, illuminated everything. It was something to see.

After the wedding my wife and I, and many of our guests went to the bar at Claudio's where we stayed past midnight--my wife was still in her wedding dress sitting on a bar stool. We left just after midnight to stay at the Morning Glory B&B (an excellent little B&B), while our friends moved to Claudio's outdoor bar (out on the dock) where a rock band was playing. They closed the place down around 3 I think, dancing and drinking shots. They had the time of their lives.

I come from the DC area as do most of my friends, while my wife is from Center Moriches. Most of my friends had never been to Long Island before our wedding. Almost every single one of them told us that our wedding was one of the best they had ever been to, and I believe them because I know they got to experience something that was totally unique and different for them.

Long Island is a very special place and I was glad that we were able to bring our good friends there to experience it for the first time.

As an aside, the folks who run The Old Field vineyard--Chris and Ros Baiz--were fantastic to work with and are great people. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a perfect wedding site.
