Sinking Off Atlantique

by Elvis Morales
(Brentwood, Long Island)

I was 13 when I first met beautiful Atlantique and fell in love. Growing up in a below middle class family in Brentwood I never imagined such a place existed.

One summer my friend and I took out a small paddle boat that had been grounded for years, imagine our surprise when we realized it was grounded for a reason.

As we paddled out she sprung a leak and before we knew it we where drifting towards Bay Shore with the boat leaking faster than I could bale. Just as I lost hope and thought of abandoning the boat and swimming back to land, a 14 foot Boston Whaler came up and threw us a line.

When we made it back to the docks we were greeted by a crowed of people that had watched this incredibly embarrassing event. Nevertheless Atlantique, my first great love, was looking over us as she does all who lover her.

Summer Memories

by Kathleen
(West Islip)

We have a boat and we try to venture just about every weekend to Atlantique, Fire Island. If you are a boater, then you would understand why a lot of your responses to summer parties/BBQs would be "No." There is just a limited amount of summer days, and if you do not use the boat, much money is wasted.

My husband, myself, our two girls and our dog, Daphne, usually get underway Friday evening (right after work), and spend the entire weekend; until late Sunday at Atlantique, on our boat. We consume, right up to the very end of the day Sunday evening, the sunshine and beach. Our girls also look forward to the after dinner travel to the "Shack" for ice cream. We also enjoy our walk to Fair Harbor every Saturday morning.

This place is a dog friendly place, which we are very happy about since our Golden Retriever, Daphne, is a very big part of our family.

We, as a family, have made a lot of memories on our boat at our favorite family boating place-Atlantique, Fire Island.

Showering

(Spring Hill, FL)

Welcome to Atlantique

Welcome to Atlantique

I used to go to Atlantique beach on Fire Island every weekend and every summer from 1968 to 1977 and always had a great time.

I can remember cooking steaks on the grill, when a seagull flew down and flew away with it. I also remember one morning around 7:00am I went to take a shower, because the water was warm at that time. I heard a young women showering next to me and so I said good morning and she said good morning to me, when I noticed that she did not have a stitch of clothing and I was shocked because you would normally have your bathing suit on.

I also remember the prices for docking was $1.00 to $2.00. Well since I moved to Spring Hill, FL its never the same. As they say, you can take me out of NY, but you can not take NY out of me. It sure was great, and I also miss Brentwood where I grew up. Thanks, take care.

Atlantique Memories

by Appleby
(Long Island)

Worked as a Beach Attendent for the Town of Islip at Atlantique Beach from 1974-1978. Getting paid (not much but I was just a kid) to work at a beach where I went in the ocean every day - and boogie-boarding and skim-boarding. It sure beat working at some fast food place like most kids did.
I didn't know it had the time, but these were truely the best days of my life. "When you're in.....you're out".
