Thank You Long Island

I have been really obsessed with the idea of a man from Long Island for some time now. The first few men from Long Island that I ever met really did not impress me. They were boring and told too many stories, and didn't really even listen to what I had to say.

The first time I ever went to Long Island, I was at a Thanksgiving dinner party in Wantagh with said Long Island men who could not hold my attention. There were also many Long Island women there who did not impress me either. After this first trip ended, I still knew Long Island had to hold at least one good man...

Well, I finally met a nice man from Long Island, but I did not meet him on Long Island, and he is (thankfully) not from Wantagh. Instead he is from West Islip (the best Islip.) On my third trip to Long Island, this man (who I will only refer to as PCFB) drove 23 miles to see me. To him this is very far, since most Long Islanders think driving to Queens is a hassle.

To make a long story short, this Long Island man is now visiting me in Los Angeles, and he is being a typical Long Islander while here... It's raining and he doesn't think it's cold out, he says "har-a-bull" and no one but me understands him, and he sleeps with his arms underneath me.

Thank you Long Island for birthing PCFB.

Love,
Bethany S. Cosentino

Dear Bethany,

Your story is touching. I’m glad you met such a wonderful man. I can assure you that although you had the misfortune of meeting some boring people, there are plenty of fine men and women here on Long Island—even in Wantagh.

nice men on LI? nice people?????
by: Anonymous

I've lived here my whole life. Until the 1980's, yes people were nice, quiet, neighborly, respectful. Then the push from NYC and Queens and Nassau out into Suffolk. With them, they brought their attitudes and eastern LI was forever changed. If you're having trouble paying your property taxes, you can thank those who moved to Suffolk over the past two decades.

So, now? People are pushy, self-absorbed, rude, drive like lunatics. Men on LI are either married, gay or alcoholics. I have friends that have lived all over the country and they say LI is like another planet from the rest of the country (and that's not a compliment) I hate it here and hope to leave for a locale where people are more gentile and not so brash. Yes, I can leave and I will but it's not easy when family and friends are here. If there are nice men on LI, I have no idea where they are.

And, LIers why don't you ever STOP TALKING? In restaurants it's even worse - only the people sitting right next to you are interested in what you have to say. The entire population of Suffolk County doesn't want to hear you. (I think it's cultural - there are a lot of people from loud cultures living here and I am NOT talking about the illegal immigrants).
